Lesson: Introducing Independent Reading, 6th grade

Learning Target
:  Understand the new role of independent reading.

Success Criteria:
A.  Write on your exit ticket at least 3 reasons independent reading is important.
B.  Tell your group 1 way Independent Reading will stay the same and 1 way it will be different.
C.  List on your exit ticket the 1 behavior you will need to employ to make Independent Reading work.
D.  Write my Independent Reading Mission Statement on an exit ticket.

Lesson:
1.  (5)  Have reading journal out and labeled "Independent Reading".  Create groups and re-sort  kids (Slide the line).  Line:  I love reading - I'm not convinced at this point!

2.  Introduce the learning objective and success criteria.  Have students restate it using "6th grade language".
3.  (10) Brainstorm why independent reading is important.  PTT (goal 10 ideas), Partner share, Partners choose 2 best answers and record on the board.  Look over chart - any others that HAVE to be there?  Have students write the top 10 reasons they agree with in their journal.  Tell the class:  Reading a book at your "just right" level is the number one way to become a better reader!
4.  (10) Create a T-chart. Label the left side: where does IR happen now? PTT, Group brainstorm, #2 - share where Independent reading happens NOW.  Reiterate that research shows that Reading a book at your "just right" level is the number one way to become a better reader!  Thinking about research, where should IR happen?  Answer:  In the classroom, every reading day.
5. (15) Create a 3T-chart - Independent Reading LOOKS LIKE / SOUNDS LIKE / FEELS LIKE. Chart responses to if IR is happening in the classroom, what would it look like? sound like? feel like?

6.  What does you behavior need to be for this room to look like, sound like, and feel like this?  PTT, Group share...#1 shares behaviors.  (Teacher - circles words or adds to chart.)

5.  Exit Ticket: Have students complete the second part of the IR Mission Statement.

*Name

*Do you need a new book?  YES / NO
Why is IR important to you?  Independent reading is the most effective way to make me a better reader.
*What do you have to do well during IR time?
How will you make that happen? I will make sure the I can read my IR book fluently and retell what has happened.  I will make sure I use comprehension strategies to better understand my book. I will become a better reader.

*On the back, list 3 reasons IR is important!
